What would a queer intervention into Europeanisation studies look like? Recent debates in queer studies have spurred critical investigations into the idea of Europeanness as inherently liberal and tolerant, especially in terms of gender and sexuality, vis-à-vis an intolerant, pre-modern, non-European Other. “Queering Europe,” then, could mean putting emphasis on the relevance of gender, sexuality, and heteronormativity in racialised imaginations of Europe. On the other hand, it could also refer to “queer” as a verb. In this sense, queering can be understood as a deconstructive practice that questions the supposedly unquestionable truths of identity and normativity, not limited to gender and sexuality. As Sara Ahmed writes, “[t]o make things queer is […] to disturb the order of things” (Ahmed 2006, 161). With two perspectives from Central and Eastern Europe, in this session of the colloquium we will debate the (often invisible) sexual politics at the heart of Europeanisation, its emancipatory potentials as well as the exclusions it produces. How do ideas and ideals of Europe influence activism, and how might they be “queered” in turn? What does it mean to think Europe from a queer perspective?
