Affects – Queer Public Feelings

Ann Cvetkovich (University of Texas / Austin)
Heather Love (University of Pennsylvania / Philadelphia)

*Public talk*

april, 7 2011
18pm till 21pm
location: University of Basel, Alte Universität, Rheinsprung 9/11,
Basel (Switzerland)

The keynote speakers introduce the field of queer affect studies and consider the intersections of affect and politics in feminist, lesbian and queer theory. They elaborate on the role of feelings in public life, on how cultural formations create affective public spheres, and on how individual affective experience can be linked to social and historical experience. In these two lectures they examine how affects shape new forms of politics and knowledge.

*Workshop for graduate students with Ann Cvetkovich and Heather Love*

Over the course of two days, we will consider the intersections of affect and politics in feminist, lesbian, and queer theory over the past few decades. Our emphasis will be on feminist generations, the experiential roots of theory, everyday life and the question of archives, genres of description and documentation, witness and trauma, shame, and queer temporality. We will begin the workshop with a look at some of the key texts in a genealogy of queer affect studies as well as some recent debates in the field (such as the “anti-social thesis”). We will also consider the ethics of documentary and witness, with special attention to questions of intimacy, genre, and scale. We will use Saidiya Hartman’s recent scholarly memoir, Lose Your Mother, about her pursuit of the history of the slave trade, to consider how queer affect studies can contribute to cultures of public memory (and the documentary challenges faced by human rights politics). We plan to discuss our collaboration (with Annamarie Jagose) on a recent issue of the journal GLQ: Lesbian and Gay Quarterly (“Rethinking Sex”) focused on the scholarship, activism, and legacy of Gayle Rubin. We will also discuss the collaborative work of the Public Feelings group (Austin, TX). Readings will include work by Lauren Berlant, Wendy Brown, Cvetkovich, Lee Edelman, Avery Gordon, Judith (Jack) Halberstam, Saidiya Hartman, Love, Jose Esteban Munoz, Rubin, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Kathleen Stewart, and others.
