Duties
This position involves research and teaching, as well as administrative duties. It is also within the responsibility of the position to follow development within one’s own research area and to follow the development of society that is of relevance to the research and teaching. The holder of the appointment as Research associate shall mainly conduct research but also participate in teaching on the undergraduate and advanced levels at Linköping University.
Qualifications
The position requires a doctorate or an equivalent degree from a foreign university.
Candidates with a doctorate obtained no longer than five years before the expiration date of the application will be considered first.
Grounds for assessment
The grounds for assessment for the appointment as Research associate are the extent of proficiency and the extent of administrative and other skills that are of relevance to the subject of the appointment and the duties involved.
The extent of proficiency in developing and leading university operations and staff, as well as the ability to collaborate with with the surrounding society and inform about research and development, will also be considered.
In the assessment for this position special importance is attached to scientific proficiency.
Scientific proficiency shall be proven with own research as well as with research planning and leadership. Moreover, scientific proficiency can be proven through ability to achieve research results in collaboration with other teachers and through ability to inform about research.
Pedagogical skills can be shown with broad and solid knowledge in the subject of the appointment. Pedagogical skills shall also be proven through the ability to propagate commitment and interest for the subject, the ability to structure and organize knowledge mass for courses, the ability to motivate students for own learning, the ability to communicate with students and other teachers, as well as the ability to innovate.
Appointing program
An appointing programme has been defined for guidance when assessing applicants for the position:
At the Department of Thematic Studies research, research training, graduate and undergraduate education are carried out in multi- and interdisciplinary units. A specific thematic programme defines the profile of the research and education of each unit as well as the corresponding study plan for its PhD training. The Department of Thematic Studies gives priority to research training, carried out within the framework of these programmes, and to the clustering of the doctoral students in graduate schools within each thematic unit. Today, there are four thematic units at the Department: Child Studies, Gender Studies, Technology and Social Change, and Water and Environmental Studies. Within the thematic units, scholars with backgrounds in social science, humanities, natural and technical sciences as well as in interdisciplinary fields collaborate. At the Department of Thematic Studies, there are two international Master’s programmes, a graduate level programme, and the Department is also committed to undergraduate education within child studies, geography, environmental studies, gender studies and thematic natural science. The Department of Thematic Studies hosts six centres that undertake research and education: Centre for Climate Science and Policy Research, Centre of Gender Excellence, Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, Swedish-International Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, Centre for Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities, and Centre for Technology and Society at Linköping University (www.tema.liu.se).
Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary unit, which is part of the Department of Thematic Studies, Linköping University. The unit directs an international Centre of Gender Excellence, developed in collaboration with the Centre for Feminist Social Studies at Örebro University and the Division of Gender and Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Linköping University. The excellence centre is co-funded by the Swedish Research Council [Vetenskapsrådet]. The Department of Thematic Studies: Gender Studies hosts a Nordic as well as a Swedish-International Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and collaborates with the Centre for Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities of Linköping University (www.tema.liu.se/tema-g).
Research and research training at the Department of Thematic Studies: Gender Studies is organized with a thematic focus on meanings of gender in culture, society, economy, technology, medicine, natural science and knowledge production in general, and is based on multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to theories and methodologies. Priority is given to analyses of gender/sex, gender identities, gender relations and gendered power differentials in their intersections with other important sociocultural categorizations such as ethnicity, class, sexuality, age, dis/ability, nationality, geopolitical positioning etc. Dialogue with Swedish, Nordic and broader European and international gender research is given high priority as well as research which is related to current socially and culturally relevant issues.
Currently, the Department of Thematic Studies: Gender Studies has three professors, an associate professor, an assistant professor and thirteen doctoral students, divided into four sub-areas: Gender and Culture; Gender, Organisation and Economic Change; Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities; the “Post-humanities Hub”. A fourth professorship in Gender and Knowledge Production within the Natural, Technical and Medical Sciences is under appointment, and one more position as Associate Professor in Gender Studies is about to be announced. Generally, it is expected that the activities of the unit will expand and that a staff expansion will take place in the years to come. Shifting numbers of visiting scholars from abroad as well as from Sweden are affiliated with the Department of Thematic Studies: Gender Studies and the excellence centre for longer and shorter periods of time.
The here announced position refers to the sub-area of Gender and Culture with special reference to critical studies of sexualities, gender, sex and body in intersection with other social categories.
The position requires a well documented overview and research experience within the field of feminist cultural studies as well as well documented knowledge about critical theories of gender, sex, sexuality and body.
All disciplinary and interdisciplinary academic backgrounds can be of relevance for the position, but all applicants must be able to document a high level of interdisciplinary experience and research based knowledge of gender studies and the field of critical studies of sexualities and cultural studies. Moreover, solid knowledge of interdisciplinary gender theory and feminist theory, including an overview of their genealogies, central issues and key questions in methodologies and research methods is also a requirement.
The holder of the position shall be able to initiate and carry out projects in collaboration with colleagues on national and international level as well as with stakeholders outside of Academia, and should also be skilled in informing broader publics about research results.
The positions include the holder’s own research and research supervision within the field, in collaboration with other employees of the Department, as well as the dissemination of research results. The tasks also include that the holder of the position commits her/himself to the development of the unit’s research within the area. Experience with research collaboration, nationally as well as internationally is, therefore, advantageous.
As part of the tasks, the holder of the position is also expected to contribute to the education and teaching of the unit at both undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and to research coordination among others within the framework of the international Centre of Gender Excellence and the international research schools that are hosted by the unit.
Both the research training programme and the research coordination at the unit are often conducted in English. Solid knowledge and proficiency in English is therefore a requirement. International experience is a merit.
